Air-To-Air Missiles Inventory of Bangladesh Air Force

Bangladesh Air Force has a missile inventory mainly consists of air-to-air missile (AAMs) systems. Most of these AAMs was bought along with the fighter jets BAF bought. The origins of those missiles are Russia and China as Bangladesh operating only Chinese & Russian combat aircrafts.

Here we showed some available figure of those missile inventory currently Bangladesh Air Force deployed in the line of active duty. There’s no price for peace other than maintaining it. Bangladesh is a peace loving country and always work to uphold the stability of the region.

All Bangladesh’s weaponry are defensive. There are no any industrial facility to produce such high tech defense equipment in country. Hence Bangladesh relied on foreign sources to acquire air-to-air missile systems. The Mig-29s & Yak-130s of BAF carry Russian made R-27 & R-73 air-to-air missiles. The number of the dogfight weapons are unknown. On the other hand Chinese Chengdu Aerospace Corporation built F-BGIs carry PL-2, PL-5 (some variants), PL-7 and PL-9C AAMs.

Some of the BAF F-7BGI fighter jets can carry C-704 Anti-Ship missiles, however, it’s not clear that Bangladeshi F-7s are currently deployed with this AShMs. For the coming Russian/Chinese medium range combat aircrafts (MRCA) of Bangladesh will get advanced anti-ship/anti-surface warfare weapon systems as it stated that those MRCAs will be deployed to secure country’s maritime border.

Bangladesh Air Force will get most advanced beyond visual range air-to-air missiles (BVRAAMs) with the next fighter jet purchase. Current era of aerial warfare gets complex as technological advancement happening continuously in the sector. To fight any modern adversary BAF needs both BVR and WVR capabilities. And, for sure, it’ll get a bunch of air-to-surface missiles too to increase anti-surface warfare capabilities. So, it can be surely assumed that a large number of BVRAAM and WVRAAM are going to come to the BAF missile inventory.

WHY Bangladesh Air Force keep BUYING Yak-130 trainer jets, though crashing ??

Why Bangladesh Air Force bought Yak-130 trainer cum light attack aircraft from Russia?
Reasons behind why Bangladesh Air Force purchased Yak-130 trainer jets to train their pilots over other possible options!

Bangladesh Air Force bought Yak-130 advanced jet trainer cum light attack aircraft, though it was several times crashed during development! And, even, just after induction there was a fatal accident of this trainer plane. This is the latest Russian trainer plane that enter in service after the fall of Soviet Union.

So, why Bangladesh bought it? Bangladesh Air Force bought Yak-130 fighter trainer aircraft to train their pilots for 4.5th generation and fifth generation fighter jets. It is also can be armed to fight low-intensity aerial & ground threats. Hence BAF choose it as a cost-effective solution.

Other options like South Korean KAI T-50, Chinese Hongdu L-15 and Italian Leonardo M-346 are the analogous of the Yak-130. Among these, Leonardo M-346 is the Italian variant of the Yakovlev-130. And, Italy can’t sell their variant to non-NATO countries as the agreement bares them. On the other side, Korean T-50 is much costly for Bangladesh Air Force in terms of price and maintenance costs. So, T-50 Golden Eagle also ruled out.

Chinese L-15 could be an options, but, then it was not fully developed. When Bangladesh signed the Yak-130 deal, Chinese L-15 wasn’t serially produced then. And BAF was not considering it even. So, only Russian Yakovlev Yak-130 was the only option for BAF. But, the accidental incidents happens with the Yak-130s are solely manufacturers problems, not Bangladesh Air Force’s faults.

The RFP issued by the Bangladesh Air Force stated the specifications of the Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAV) BAF interested to buy

Bangladesh Air Force issued request-for-proposal to purchase Medium-Altitude Long-Range (MALE) unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

Earlier it was believed that BAF will buy Turkish Aerospace Industries made Anka-S UCAV. But new RFP showed up and the procurement has been opened for all parties interested to supply UAV to Bangladesh Air Force.  Technological advancement is the key purpose of inducting military drones into BAF services.

There are various options, mainly from China & Turkey, for armed drones for Bangladesh. Turkey has TAI Anka-S special ISR & combat UAS and Baykar Makina developed Bayraktar TB2Tactical UAV which is missile armed drone. On the other hand, China has much more options. AVIC China has CH-4 & CH-5 armed UAVs which can perform surveillance and combat missions precisely. Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group (CAIG) recently unveiled their most advanced UCAV Wing Loong-2 (Pterodactyl-2), and this is capable to carry a wide array of munitions to perform combat missions.

Now its upto Bangladesh Air Force whether they choose Chinese one or Turkish. But such highly advanced systems will surely enhance BD Air Force’s operational capabilities to a new height. This will also be a true force multiplier.
